WASHINGTON -- Khalid Sheik Mohammed, accusato di essere il genio criminale dietro all'attentato dell'11 settembre, ha confessato di aver mentito profusamente agli agenti che lo torturavano per estorcergli la verità sulle sue attività eversive. Durante l'udienza, Zubaydah ha rivelato che queste pratiche lo hanno «quasi ucciso in almeno quattro occasioni».
«Dopo un paio di mesi, durante i quali ho quasi perso la ragione e la vita,» ha dichiarato Zubaydah, «hanno incominciato a prendere le misure necessarie per non farmi morire».
Ha inoltre affermato che, dopo essere stato trattato per molti mesi in questo modo, le autorità hanno concluso che non fosse il numero 3 di al-Qa‘ida, come avevano a lungo creduto.
